What does "open by default" actually mean?
It means the metadata about your research is open and reusable unless a specific field is marked confidential — the opposite of a closed system where openness is the exception. You still control what is published; the default simply favours openness.
How is this different from a repository?
A repository stores the files; a CRIS records the whole research context — projects, funding, people, and the relationships between them — and connects to repositories rather than replacing them. Stellacris holds the record and links to where the binaries live.
Does it support the Barcelona Declaration commitments?
Yes — open by default, working with open-supporting systems, open identifiers, and support for the wider open-information ecosystem are exactly the commitments the declaration asks institutions to make, and they are built into how Stellacris works.
